TINGKAH LAKU PREHENSI, MASTIKASI DAN DEFEKASI KUDA SANDELWOOD (EQUUS CABALLUS) DI PADANG LAIWILA DESA KALIUDA KECAMATAN PAHUNGA LODU KABUPATEN SUMBA TIMUR

ABSTRAK
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkah laku prehensi, mastikasi dan defekasi kuda
Sandelwood (Equus caballus) di Padang Laiwila Desa Kaliuda Kecamatan Pahunga Lodu
Kabupaten Sumba Timur. Penelitian ini menggunakan 10 ekor kuda Sandelwood yang terdiri dari 5
ekor jantan dan 5 ekor betina. Penelitian ini menggunakan encounter method and all occurences
recording. Data tingkah laku prehensi dan mastikasi dianalisis menggunakan uji t-test independent
dengan taraf kepercayaan 95%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkah laku prehensi kuda
Sandelwood yaitu diawali dengan kuda berjalan menghampiri pakan lalu memanjangkan leher dan
mengambil pakan tersebut menggunakan bibir bagian atas serta gigi untuk memotong pakan.
Frekuensi prehensi tertinggi terjadi pada pagi hari. Tingkah laku mastikasi kuda Sandelwood dapat
dilihat dari pergerakan rahang atas dan rahang bawah kuda untuk memperkecil partikel pakan.
Frekuensi mastikasi tertinggi terjadi pada pagi hari. Tingkah laku defekasi kuda ditandai dengan
perilaku mencium tempat kotoran lamanya, mengangkat ekor, mengeluarkan feses melalui anus,
mencium kembali tempat pembuangan feses lalu meninggalkan tempat tersebut. Bentuk feses kuda
Sandelwood yaitu lonjong, bulat dan tidak beraturan dengan warna feses hijau kecoklatan.

ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to determine feeding behavior include the frequency
prehention, mastication, and defecation of Sandelwood horse (Equus caballus) in Padang Laiwila
Kaliuda Village Pahunga Lodu District East Sumba Regency. This study used 10 Sandelwood horses
consisting of 5 males and 5 females. Thus, encounter method and all occurrences recording method
was used for this study. Data behaviors and frequency of prehention and mastication was analyzed
using analysis of independent t-test with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that
prehenstion behaviors sequentially include the horse walking toward the feed, lengthening the neck,
taking the feed using the upper lip and teeth to cut feed with the highest frequency at the time of
morning day. Mastication behavior was characterized by movement of the upper and lower jaw to
reduce feed particles with frequency morning day highest compared to the other feeding
administrations. Mastication behavior sequence involves kissing the site of the old dirt and then
lifting his tail and removing the stool through the anus. Finally, they kissed againwhere the stool
threw away and left the place. Morphological faeces namely oval, round and irregular with a brownish
green color.
